Back to Basics: Understanding HUD & the LIHTC Program
 
HUD can affect a LIHTC investment in a handful of predictable ways—often driving additional requirements, approvals, and operational constraints that don’t always read clearly in the LIHTC documents investors rely on. Those HUD touchpoints can influence everything from closing readiness to ongoing performance, compliance risk, and the intensity of asset management over the 15-year compliance period.
 
This Third Thursday will focus on the key ways HUD most commonly intersects with LIHTC deals, what those intersections mean for investor risk and returns, and what to look for up front versus what to monitor after closing.
 
We’ll walk through when HUD is a direct driver (such as rental assistance contracts, FHA-insured financing, and HUD program rules) and when HUD influence shows up indirectly through other parties and layered regulations—so investors leave with a clearer framework for underwriting HUD-touching deals and managing them confidently over time.
